What would we invent if journalism didn’t exist?

I spoke at The Power of Storytelling, in Bucharest, Romania – exploring a question I’ve been thinking about for a while. That question is, “What would we invent if journalism didn’t exist?”.

What actually is it that we want and need from journalism, and what would we create to fulfil those needs if “mainstream”, “legacy” or my new favourite term, “status quo” journalism didn’t exist.

That’s a personal as well as a systemic story, because even though I’ve been a journalist working in mainstream newsrooms for nearly 30 years, it’s never even worked for me. So, I also shared a little bit of the story of me – and how that’s shaped my thinking and the work that I do.
